The Speck In Your Brother’s Eye

Reading in Luke 6:41-42 Jesus refers to our sight through the appeal He poses. “Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye?” Much of Jesus’ teaching was about relationship and how His follower’s would relate to one another. I have found that our biggest relational tests often happen within the body of Christ. Jesus cuts to the heart of the matter by saying it is easier to see your brother’s rather small fault than to deal with the larger fault in your own life. The next verse explains that many times your issue impairs your ability to see accurately and help your brother. Hypocrisy is the result of too much attention on fixing the other guy.

There are several things stated implicitly in these two verses:

  1. Our attention is automatically on the other person.  What you put your attention on is what you will see most readily.
  2. The Size of the fault, infraction, weakness is addressed.  You can be sure that the other person’s speck aggravates you to the point of you wanting to deal with it.
  3. We naturally default to speck-plucking to avoid dealing with our own issues.
  4. Jesus doesn’t often call names, but he calls this person a hypocrite.
  5. Vision is the issue as we are dealing with your eyes.
  6. Clear sight is a result of getting the plank out of your eye first.
  7. Never default to blame-shifting.
  8. Plank-plucking is a healthy ministry you can bless yourself with in order to keep clear vision in your life.

Maintain great vision and spiritual health by letting the Holy Spirit speak to your eyes.

Hope to see you at the service and picnic this Sunday.
